 1. Dr Tom Insel delivers message of hope for the global mental health crisis

Dr Tom Insel, one of the world’s foremost mental health experts, delivered a lecture at UNSW saying that the world is facing a global health emergency as rates of mental health and suicide increase.

2. Men who suffer from anxiety are more than twice as likely to die from cancer

The University of Cambridge released results from a study this week which claims that men who suffer from anxiety are more than twice as likely to die from cancer than men who don’t. What’s surprising though, is that women seem to be immune.

3. Overwhelming youth helpline demand leaves 150 young people a week without the support they need.

Youthline, a youth helpline in New Zealand, are so overwhelmed with young people calling its service that 150 a week are missing out on help; leaving vulnerable young people without the support they need.

4. App launched to help police officers struggling with mental health

Police Association secretary Ron Iddles created equipt, an app launched on Tuesday to help police dealing with anxiety and depression. It gives them tips on work-life balance and how to deal with stress and improve their lifestyle.

5. Anxiety is on the rise as life satisfaction levels improve

In England, the general satisfaction of life has improved according to official figures, with 28% of people surveyed rating themselves 9 or 10 out of 10 for satisfaction. However, people are becoming more anxious; women reported the highest satisfaction (31%) compared to men (28%).
